Washington D.C. Metro Canopies

A Design Competition

Sponsor | Washington Metro Transit Authority

Location | Washington | DC

Competition Objectives | To provide protection to the 46 uncovered escalator entrances of the underground Metrorail stations in Washington DC.

Design Concept | The design was an emblematic expression above ground of the structure, materials, and nature of the underground transport system.

This Metro opening construction is a tri-partite system consisting of a steel framework flexible and accommodating of the entrance and exit variances of 47 stations, a glass and metal enclosure, and a glass canopy.  More than a mere covering, this system alludes to the poured-in-place concrete structure of the metro tunnels.

While on the ground, it is meant to be a visible structural icon made of glass ad steel with its encased electronic multi-media display panels, signifying to the public what is underground-the un-seen, the un-visible.
