Classic Floor Designs | Showroom

Retail, Showroom

Location: Washington, DC

Size: 12,000 SF, 1,330 SM

Project Description: The firm was hired was to create a modern and unique showroom environment for Classic Floor Designs. The project goal was to design a space flexible enough for both static displays, designer/client charettes, and to display thousands of carpet, wood, ceramic tile, marble, and vinyl composite samples as well as mock-ups of different wood floorings, inlays, finishes and area rugs.

The architect set out to develop a workable showroom in a space that is four times as long as it is wide and maximize the available display area without visually overloading clients. The architectural elements, materials, and furnishings imply a residential interior with an edge while functioning as a showroom and a design gallery. To achieve the overall effect of a soigné SOHO loft, the former suite of windowless offices was demolished and the ceiling opened up to its 15’ height. The structural grid columns at the center of the space were unfettered from interior walls. They lend definition to the spatial sequence of display and meeting areas but allow for free flow and permit the entire space to be used as a showcase for installations.

Designed in sections of three with two full-height rolling screens of perforated aluminum on recessed tracks in front, the cases maximize the display area yet keep it from being overwhelming. With two parts of the display behind the screen at a given time, what is shown is more intimated rather than constantly exposed. Intermediate panels create open work areas with views into other spaces. These systems, both decorative and functional, help give the showroom its unique look. Custom floor-to-ceiling display cases of black, satin finished anodized aluminum run the length of the side wall and punctuate the various show/meeting areas.
